This week during Cannes Lions, the Microsoft Beach Club is utilizing Soft Array, a digital art installation created for Microsoft by the London-based studio Arcade, showcasing connected experiences on Windows 8. The installation is a programmable environment made up of over fifty interconnected Windows 8 devices. These devices are embedded within a family of structures, running innovative apps created by designers and developers. The structures rely on a software service that will soon be open sourced to allow anyone to build proof of concepts with apps that work together across multiple devices to complete end user scenarios.
Several design agencies in the UK took part in creating unique experiences on Soft Array for the special showcase at Cannes Lions. The agencies, were able to take advantage of the flexible development environment of Windows 8 to create interactive apps. These apps include a connected platform for gauging user sentiment, a beat box choir, and an artistic representation of the changing seasons.
